Since I first heard about it, I’ve had Scoops in my sights. And today I was finally able to pay it a visit. Turns out it’s less than a quarter mile from the Melrose exit off the 101 when I visit L. That’s going to translate to a lot more visits to Scoops in the coming weeks!
I was afraid that Scoops would knock Carmela out of the top spot for best ice cream ever But I resolved that by allowing TWO favorite ice cream places. The thing Scoops has got going for it are the flavors. They are truly inspired. Today featured balsamic raspberry, brown bread and even montecristo cigar. Apparently they’ve also done bacon and wasabi. I chose the pistachio fig and lavender coconut – both refreshingly creamy and wonderfully delicious.
Scoops also scores big on price – two large scoops of this frozen delight for only $2.75. I didn’t check, but I bet they pack pints of it, too.
I didn’t see much literature regarding their background or ingredients. That’s likely where Carmela has the edge – there’s a lot to be said for using local produce, all-natural ingredients and biodegradable packaging.
Either way, there’s plenty of room for both, and LA’s a better place thanks to Scoops and Carmela. Now I’m going to have to try Mashti Malones…
[Sunday UPDATE: I could not resist another visit on my way home. It was good to find out that (1) they are only open 2PM - 6PM on Sunday and (2) only have about half the flavors available. Still, I was able to this time try the brown bread (YUM!) and the roasted corn (nice idea, but I'd rather just eat roasted corn). Too bad - I was actually hoping for some fruit sorbets today, but they were not to be had.]
